The Swirl

The Swirl coffee table from The Mondrian Collection.

The whole collection was born out of inspiration by the lines and shapes of the great artist and the movement that he belonged to, the De Stijl movement, to which he also was a major contributor. However, the more we worked on the collection the more we found that we were inspired by even more artists, their individual lines, colors and shapes, among these artists were Picasso & Braque. What started as a single inspiration evolved into a collection that embodies the spirit of many artists that we love.

This coffee table was made out of charcoal stained oak inlaid with Sycamore lines. These lines are very much Middle Eastern in origin; they were traditionally used to make the beautiful designs on traditional handmade backgammon cases, the difference is that they used to be made out of ivory along with mother of pearl and ebony.

My vintage backgammon set, part of the inspiration!

We wanted to use the very modern shape of the table and infuse it with a traditional element which when taken out of context becomes a new modern element by itself and assumes a new character.

This creator and artist first is inspired by spiders and now by backgammon boards. Whatever next??? The outcome is absolutely brilliant and is a must in homes of people who want something totally artistic, modern and looks unique and different. I have managed to fill my home with many pieces of art from qerat and I am always on the lookout for more pieces as they roll off the factory.
